H Y B R I D

Hybrid is about the exploration of the self, and therefore, it is about the exploration of our humanity. It started with memories and quickly evolved into the relationship between memory and sensorial experience. How we remember through the senses, and how senses connect to the mind. This is an interaction between both our thinking and sensuous being. I am intrigued by the idea of exploring how truthfully I can depict this interaction in a visual language. Other subjects emerged as I delved into this exploration: The body-mind relationship, time, verbal and non verbal language, intuition, contemplation, vulnerability, connectedness with our surroundings and other beings. Stitching has become a process of creating an alternate space within the tangible and intangible worlds.

Performance by Nancy Spossato and Alejandra Ramirez. This performance was an improvisation informed by the text written along these visual works in my zine “On being hybrid”. It involved words (a rational approach/the mind), body movement (the intuition/the body), and interaction with the audience in the form of questioning and sharing of breathing/energy (the in between). Through the performance we enquired about how the perception of time is different for both the mind and the body and where do these meet or collide. It was also an exercise on vulnerability and contemplation, in which the self is trying to look inwards despite being in the spotlight.
